Students, faculty attend faith, history conference

Huntington, Ind.-On Sept. 20-23, a group of 11 HU history majors (Arika Bowles, Wes Byler, Ben Decker, Christianne Gates, Brandon Harnish, Jessica Hollopeter, Elizabeth Holtrop, Mathew Kendig, Micah Kunze, Brad McDaniel, and Naomi Woods) accompanied by the history faculty (Dr. Dwight Brautigam, Prof. Bill VanDoodeward, Dr. Paul Michelson, and Dr. Jeff Webb), attended the 25th fall meeting of the Conference on Faith and History, held at Oklahoma Baptist University. The Conference on Faith and History, founded in 1967, is an affiliate of the American Historical Association and brings together historians interested in the relationship of the Christian faith to historical studies. The meeting was divided into two sessions: an undergraduate conference at which students presented papers and the regular professional conference, hosting panels by graduate students and senior scholars. At the student conference, Gates, a junior history major from Georgia, presented a paper on American reactions to the Armenian genocide titled "Ambassadors or Nations or Humanity?" while Drs. Brautigam and Webb chaired panels on "Reformation Founding Fathers: What They Really Belived" and "Cross Culture: Contesting Norms in Contemporary Christianity."
History students and professors attended the Conference on Faith and History.
At the professional conference, Dr. Michelson chaired and participated in a roundtable discussion on "The Education of Historians for the Twenty-First Century," and Drs. Brautigam and Webb chaired sessions on "Philip Schaff and Church Historians" and "Christian Faith and Intellectually Rigorous High School History Instruction." Dr. Gary House, of the HU Graduate School of Christian Ministries, gave a paper on "Jeremiah Lanphier and the Layman's Prayer Revival: The Event of the Century."
Drs. Brautigam and Michelson also participated in the fall board meeting of the CFH at OBU in their capacities as treasurer and secretary of the organization. The CFH offices have been located at Huntington University since 2004, which also hosts the CFH website at www.huntington.edu/cfh.
