Summer Theatre Youth Camp to stage ‘Annie Jr.’

Huntington, Ind.-Huntington University's Summer Theatre Youth Camp will present "Annie Jr." at 2 and 7 p.m. on July 21 in Zurcher Auditorium in the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

Tickets are $5 and are available through cast members or by calling the MCA Box Office at (260) 359-4261. There is no reserved seating.

"Based on the popular comic strip, 'Annie Junior' tells of a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan," according to the Broadway Junior Web site. "In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations, befriends President Franklin Roosevelt and finds a new family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt named Sandy."

This production is the capstone of Huntington University's second Summer Theatre Youth Camp and features all 54 campers in various roles. Through the four-week camp, campers ages 6 to 15 learn basic theatrical training from theatre professionals and perform a fully produced musical theatre production. For youth ages 16-18, an apprentice program is offered at the same time. Apprentices are students with theatre interests that assist with facilitating the camp. They work more closely with the camp directors and serve as assistant directors, assistant choreographers, stage managers and assistant designers.
