Terre Haute South Vigo, Chi win mathematics competition

Huntington, Ind. " Huntington College hosted the semiannual Huntington College High School Mathematics Competition on Saturday, November 1, 2002. Top honors in the competition were awarded to Terre Haute South Vigo with 685 points. Carmel placed second with 590 points followed by Hamilton Southeastern in third place with 468 points. Six area high school teams met to compete for individual and team awards for their demonstration of mathematical ability. The teams were comprised of Ayersville Local Schools (Defiance, Ohio), Carmel High School (Carmel, Ind.), Hamilton Southeastern High School (Fishers, Ind.), KASH (Kokomo Area Schools at Home), Jimtown (Elkhart, Ind.) and Terre Haute South Vigo (Terre Haute, Ind.).
Gold medalist for individual scores went to Ann Chi, a senior at Terre Haute South Vigo, with 190 points out of a possible 200. Ruth Dhanaraj, a junior at Carmel won the silver medal with 175 points, breaking a sudden-death tie-breaker with the third-place winner, Yizheng He, a sophomore at Carmel.
The mathematics competition is made up of three rounds. The first round is a 20 question written exam comprised of questions from algebra through calculus. Students can earn up to 100 points for the exam. The individual round of the competition is made up of 10 questions. Students are given two minutes to complete each question. Questions answered correctly within the first minute award the student with 10 points while questions answered correctly in the second minute receive five points. The final round, the team round, provides additional points for the team score. Students are provided with a multi-task problem that is best solved through the cooperative efforts of the team. A total of 30 points is possible for the final round.
Ben Eggleston, a Huntington College senior mathematics majof from Elkhart, Ind., coordinated the competition with assistance from Eric Throne, a Huntington College junior mathematics major from Stryker, Ohio. Dr. Patrick Eggleton, associate professor of mathematics at Huntington College, supervised the competition. Varun Kaushik, a sophomore computer science major from New Delhi, India, and Andrew Porterfield, a sophomore computer science major from Marion, Ind., served as student computer specialists for the competition.
The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics.
