Two students receive History award

Huntington, Ind. "In connection with Huntington College's 102nd commencement exercises on May 13, 2000, the Department of History presented two graduating seniors with the Ron Frank Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship in History. Recipients were Ms. Rachael Hinkle of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, and Ms. Heather Hirschy of Huntington, Indiana. The Frank Award is given to graduating summa cum laude seniors who have majored in history, demonstrated outstanding achievement in their undergraduate work, and given promise of exemplary contributions in their future careers.
Both recipients from the Class of 2000 had distinguished academic careers.
Ms. Hinkle completed her history degree in less than three years with a perfect 4.00 average. She was recognized by the faculty of the College with election to membership in the College's Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society. While a student, Ms. Hinkle participated in numerous co-curricular activities, including varsity softball and three years of technical work in the HC theater program. She will begin graduate study in law at Ohio Northern University this fall.
"Rachael Hinkle's lively mind and exceptional intelligence made her a joy to teach, said Dr. Dwight D. Brautigam, chairman of the Department of History. Her many academic honors and multiple law school scholarship offers are testament to her outstanding abilities as a student. We wish Rachael well and are proud to add her name to our list of honored Ron Frank Memorial Award winners.
Ms. Heather Hirschy had a similarly distinguished academic career at Huntington College. She was also selected for membership in Alpha Chi, the College's most prestigious scholastic honor. She was the 2000 recipient of the History Department's Senior Departmental Award, presented at the College's Forester Night. Ms. Hirschy simultaneously completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Bachelor of Science degree in business. She also spent a semester in Washington DC in an intensive program of study sponsored by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. In addition to her academic pursuits, Ms. Hirschy was a member of the varsity soccer team. Following graduation, she will work with an international aid program in Ethiopia.
Dr. Brautigam praised Ms. Hirschy's quick intelligence and conscientious work ethic. Heather has managed to complete two majors along with staying active in many extracurricular activities. Her semester in Washington well prepared her for work with international humanitarian relief agencies. This kind of future is exactly what Huntington College hopes for from our graduates.
The Frank Fund was established in 1973 by the family and friends in memory of Ron Frank, a Huntington College student who died suddenly during his senior year. Awards from the fund are intended to support and encourage students of history at the College.
History is among nearly 50 academic concentrations available at the four-year, Christian liberal arts college. Huntington College is located on a contemporary, lakeside campus in Huntington, Indiana.
