University instructor to present guitar recital

Huntington, Ind.-Huntington University instructor Phil Schurger will present a guitar recital at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

Schurger completed a Bachelor of Arts program at Northern Illinois University in 2003. He acquired a Master of Music in jazz guitar, composition and electronic music from Northern Illinois University during 2004. Schurger has been an instructor of guitar at Huntington University since 2005.

While attending Northern Illinois University, Schurger studied with virtuoso Fareed Haque. In the summer of 2003 he had the opportunity to work with accomplished musicians such as Ravi Coltrane, Tom Rainey and Ralph Alessi at the School of Improvisational Music in New York.

Schurger is the founder of the Phil Schurger Group, a collective of Chicago musicians. Their music draws strong influence from the jazz tradition. In 2007, the Phil Schurger Group released two albums: "Motion" and "The Black Hat." They will return to the studio in the fall of 2008 to record another set of Schurger originals.

The recital, which will feature original compositions written by Schurger, is free and open to the public.
