Ushenko’s work to be exhibited in Wilson Gallery

Huntington, Ind.-Figurative oil paintings by Audrey Ushenko will be the first works featured in Huntington University's Robert E. Wilson Gallery for the 2006-2007 season. "On a variety of levels, Ushenko scores convincingly high in the current pantheon of figure painters and sets a daunting standard for others to follow," wrote Judd Tully who covers the international art market for a variety of publications, ranging from Art & Auction to The Washington Post.
Ushenko serves as professor of painting and drawing at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. The exhibit will run from Sept. 6-29, and an artist reception will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 in the gallery, located in Huntington's Merillat Centre for the Arts.
Ushenko has received recognitions for her work including the Samuel F. B. Morse Medal and Prize for Painting and the Inglis Griswold Nelson Prize for Painting.
She earned her Ph.D. in art history and a Master of Arts in painting from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Institutions that have featured Ushenko's work include the National Academy of Design Museum in New York, N.Y.; the Minnesota Museum of Art in St. Paul, Minn.; and the Polish Museum of America in Chicago, Ill.
She has served as artist-in-residence for the Center for Advanced Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals, the Brauer Museum of Art in Valparaiso, Ind.; the St. Louis University Museum of Art in St. Louis, Mo.; and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne, Ind.
"Ushenko is by no means a passive transmitter of or transcriber of what she sees," wrote Gregg Hertzlieb, director/curator of the Brauer Museum of Art. "The visual richness that is so absorbing to viewers of her pieces is a lovely manifestation of Ushenko's own robust love for life."
