Author and Professor to Speak at Forester Lecture Series
Huntington, Ind. "Dr. William D. Romanowski, author and professor at Calvin College, will open this year's Forester Lecture Series at Huntington College on Thursday, September 20. Romanowski will address the subject and title of his new book Eyes Wide Open: Looking for God in Popular Culture (Brazos Press, 2001). This free presentation will be held in the Merillat Centre for the Arts at 7 p.m., and is open to the public.
As Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences at Calvin College, Romanowski teaches courses in film, communication and culture studies. He received his B.A. (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and his M.A. (Youngstown State University) degrees in English and his Ph.D in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University. Using video clips as illustrations, Romanowski's lecture will present a sharp Christian critique of key features of the dominant worldview in mainstream Hollywood productions.
Critics described Romanowski's book, Pop Culture Wars: Religion and the Role of Entertainment in American Life (InterVarsity, 1996), as remarkably balanced and a stunning portrait of the interplay of religion and popular culture. He is a contributing author of Dancing in the Dark: Youth, Popular Culture and the Electronic Media (Eerdmans, 1991) and co-author of Risky Business: Rock in Film (Transaction, 1991). He has also written numerous other book chapters, journal essays, and popular articles. His new book, Eyes Wide Open: Looking for God in Popular Culture (Brazos Press, 2001), has been commended as a work of a passionate imagination and incisive intellect and a lively and much needed Christian perspective on the popular arts. Romanowski has also worked as a musical and dramatic performer and lectures regularly on the subjects dealing with American culture and the entertainment industry.
Huntington College presents the Forester Lecture Series each semester. The free, public lectures are designed to bring interesting persons and topics to the attention of students and the regional community.
