Band Clinic to conclude with free concert

Huntington, Ind. " Huntington College's Music Department culminates its 22nd Annual Band Clinic with a gala concert Sunday, March 11, 3 PM in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Retired Marine Major Duane DeVoe returns as guest conductor and will wield the baton for the afternoon's entertainment. Along with a few selections by John Phillip Sousa "a tradition at this annual event "the program features Mr. Robert Lynn, adjunct professor of music, as tuba soloist for the delightful story of "Tubby the Tuba," narrated by Dr. Christopher Leland, associate professor of speech at Huntington College.
Contralto Dr. Janice Fulbright, associate professor of music and department chair, will be featured in an arrangement of "Climb Every Mountain."
Composer John Richard (class of 1996 and doctoral student at Michigan State University) offers his "Sousarean Sections," an original composition made up of bits and pieces of Sousa-like sounds, recalling the various band clinics in which John participating as a music student and percussionist while at Huntington College.
And coming all the way from Germany for this event is Mr. Michael Johner who will perform Alfred Reed's "Ballade" as saxophone soloist. In addition to performing in Germany, Mr. Johner has been a guest soloist in Austria, France, Great Britain and Japan. He has appeared at conductor as well, receiving his conducting certificate from the Music Conservatoire of Baden Wurttemberg and his diploma from the State Academy for Music at Trossingen. He currently is the head of a youth organization for music education in the Black Forest area and teaches saxophone, clarinet and music fundamentals.
As part of the band clinic, on Saturday evening (March 10), Mr. Johner will present a free talk and demonstration in the MCA auditorium, 6:30 PM. The topic is "What is German About German Music?" The public is invited to attend.
Free tickets for priority admission to Sunday's concert are available from the Merillat Centre box office, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests without tickets will be seated after 2:45 PM, as space is available.
