Burton, Ruthi receive Huntington’s May Peer Awards

Huntington, Ind.-Recipients of the Huntington University Peer Award for the month of May are Deb Burton and Dr. Mary Ruthi.

Becky Lyons, bookkeeper, passed the Peer Award to Deb Burton. Burton is the EXCEL program coordinator and has been with the university for five years.

In recognizing Burton, Lyons said, "Deb performs her duties cheerfully and is helpful in meeting the student needs. Deb is fun to be with and is always professional. She is welcoming and helpful and courteous when I come into her office. Deb is an asset to the university."

Dr. Todd Martin, associate professor of English, passed the Peer Award to Dr. Mary Ruthi. Ruthi is professor of sociology and has been with Huntington for 26 years.

In recognizing Ruthi, Martin wrote, "She consistently claims she's worthless, and she'll surely argue she doesn't deserve this award. But I'm going to pass it to her anyway. When I first came onto the faculty, Mary was my faculty mentor, and she has proved an invaluable resource for me. She helped me work through some of the typical struggles of all new faculty, encouraging me when my teaching evaluations weren't as strong as I would have liked. Anytime I had questions about promotion or tenure, she helped to clarify the process, and I still go to her when I have questions about policy or procedures. Her door is always open to students and faculty alike, and she always puts down what she is doing-no matter how frazzled she is-to talk with people. Worthless though she claims to be, she is a member of key committees on campus, participates widely in the activities and governance of her church, and serves the community extensively through her volunteer service with the Huntington Council on Aging, her work with Pathfinders, and her altruistic endeavors in Altrusa; plus, she keeps the Loew-Brenn building supplied with M&Ms. To my mind, Mary is a perfect example of Christ-like humility coupled with good deeds."
