Eggleton to present next Forester Lecture

Huntington, Ind. " Dr. Patrick Eggleton, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Huntington College, will give the next Forester Lecture at Huntington College on Monday, April 8. His lecture titled, The Rabbi's Results: Instruction That is Life Impacting, will be held in the Merillat Centre for the Arts at 7 p.m., and is free to the public. Why does the teaching style of American teachers of mathematics routinely fail to impact their students? What can we do about it? These questions serve as Eggleton's points of departure for his Forester Lecture presentation. Eggleton will draw from his considerable knowledge in the area of learning and instruction of mathematics to demonstrate the effectiveness of experiential learning methods. To Eggleton, this parallels the approach of Jesus Christ, whose methods impacted his listeners and ultimately transformed lives. In his presentation, he will share insights from excerpts of Jesus' teaching, parallel those insights with research in teaching and learning, and then share practical applications of the use of Jesus' teaching strategies in education of all forms " from child rearing to the university classroom.
Eggleton joined the faculty of Huntington College in 1999. He completed his BS and MEd degrees at the University of South Florida and his PhD in mathematics education at the University of Georgia. His dissertation was titled, The Evolving Mathematical Philosophy of a Pre-service Mathematics Teacher. Eggleton taught four years at Berry College in Georgia. He also has five years of public high school teaching experience and currently serves as the President-elect for ICTM (Indiana Council for Teachers of Mathematics). Eggleton is an active researcher and writer and has also made numerous professional presentations. His article, "Experiencing Radians," was the cover story of the September 1999 issue of Mathematics Teacher magazine. Most recently, the October 2001 issue of that magazine published his article, Triangles a la Fettuccini: A Hands-on Approach to Triangle-Congruence Theorems.
Huntington College presents the Forester Lecture Series each semester. The free, public lectures are designed to bring interesting persons and topics to the attention of students and the regional community.
