Hamblin, Middleton present works of art

Huntington, Ind. " Huntington College is pleased to present Revelations of the Journey, a show of recent work by Amanda L. Hamblin and Josh Middleton in the Robert E. Wilson Gallery in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The exhibit of art work will be presented through May 17, 2003. An artist reception will be held on Friday, May 10, from 6-8 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend, free of charge.
Amanda L. Hamblin, a native of Huntington, Ind., will complete a Bachelor of Art degree in Graphic Design and in Fine Art. As a part of the show, she will exhibit oil paintings and computer graphic works. The series of oil paintings is a reflection on the subjects of time and direction. These undeniable forces have a deep presence in all areas of life. Hamblin displays the use of symbolism to communicate messages and to stir within the viewer questions that pertain to both time and direction in his or her own life.
I have enjoyed exploring the use of normal everyday objects and their symbolic meanings as I incorporated them within the paintings, said Hamblin. I wish for these paintings to evoke deeper thoughts from the viewer as to how the visual objects are related, why they are important and what impact these thoughts have on one's own life.
The Graphic Design works of Hamblin consist of printed materials. An assortment of invitations and programs, among other products, were designed for a 60th Wedding Anniversary as well as Hamblin's own recent wedding. Two calendars also are included in the show. Each calendar is made up of photographs mostly taken by the artist. The photos have been manipulated to carry an underlying theme through each calendar. Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Macromedia Freehand 10, and Adobe InDesign 1.5 aided her computer design work.
Josh Middleton, a native of Houston, Texas, will complete a Bachelor of Art degree in Graphic Design. He displays two different styles of work. Copper pipe ties the two series together as he creates an idea of a journey a person may take in life or a trip through rocky terrain. In his first series, using computer graphics, glass and copper pipe, Middleton's three pieces invite the viewer to think about life. The illustrated graphic images are sandwiched in between a handmade frame, made of copper and etched glass. These images convey the message of a life journey one may find oneself in. His second series of design work is a display using animated graphics and photography viewed on a computer. This series is based on an advertisement for outdoors equipment.
The Robert E. Wilson Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., before and after all Merillat Centre performances, and by appointment. Admission is free. For further information, contact Rebecca Coffman at (260) 359-4272.
