High schools compete in HU math competition

HUNTINGTON, Ind. On Oct. 24, Huntington University hosted 10 area high schools for a mathematics competition. Adams Central HS in Monroe, Ind., Ayersville HS in Highland, Ohio, Bishop Luers HS in Fort Wayne, Ind., Minster HS in Minster, Ohio, Saint Joseph HS in South Bend, Ind., Clay HS in South Bend, Ind., Southwood HS in Wabash, Ind., Warsaw Community HS in Warsaw, Ind., West Noble HS in Ligonier, Ind., and Zionsville HS in Zionsville, Ind., all came to compete.

The competition consisted of three different rounds: a 20-question written exam, an individual speed round of 10 questions and a team test of five questions. Correct answers on the first two rounds earn the students points toward their individual scores, and all three rounds add points to each school's total.

The top three students were first place, Nick Wawrykow, a senior from Saint Joseph High School; second place, Bryce Carter, a junior from Warsaw Community High School; and third place, Hussain Ather, a senior from Zionsville Community High School.

The top three teams were first place, Saint Joseph High School with 595 points; second place, Zionsville Community High School with 500 points and the winning tie breaker question; and third place, Warsaw Community High School with 500 points.

The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics.
