Huntington College music faculty offer Homecoming recital

Huntington, Ind. "The music faculty of Huntington College will present the second annual Faculty Showcase Recital on Saturday, October 7, at 3 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available in advance from the Merillat Centre Box Office, (260) 359-4261. Tickets will also be available at the door. The afternoon recital will be a highlight of Huntington College's Homecoming 2000. This year's recital will feature the rich mezzo tones of voice professor, Jodi Karem-Brennan in Dvorak's exciting Gypsy Songs. Ms. Brennan is an actively performing opera artist who has appeared with regional opera companies throughout the United States and has just returned from a summer artist program with Metropolitan Opera baritone, Sherrill Milnes in Greece.
She will be accompanied by Dr. Patricia Spedden, Director of Theory and Piano Studies at Huntington College, and nationally known as a soloist and Chopin scholar. Dr. Spedden will be featured later in the program in two Chopin works for solo piano and, also, with piano professors Jean Flint, Darlene Burkett, and Music Department Chair Dr. Janice Fulbright in the rollicking Schubert Marche Militaire for two pianos, eight hands.
Clarinet professor John Gardner will collaborate with Dr. Spedden in the lush harmonies of Brahms' E-flat sonata for clarinet and piano. This is a truly beautiful Romantic work you won't want to miss! comments Dr. Janice Fulbright.
Terra Rowley will perform two favorite Puccini soprano arias, the familiar O mio babbino caro and Musetta's Waltz from La Boheme. In addition to her Master's Degree from the prestigious therapy program at Florida State University, Music Therapy Professor Terra Rowley holds a degree in voice and opera from the conservatory at Northwestern University.
Oboist, musicologist, and conductor Dr. Marlene Schleiffer will join HC orchestra concert mistress Dessie Arnold and Dr. Fulbright in French composer Jacques Ibert's Two Interludes for oboe, violin and piano. Ms. Arnold is a violinist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Dr. Schleiffer, formerly principal oboe with the Philharmonic, is well-known throughout the Midwest as a soloist and early music specialist. Dr. Fulbright had an international operatic performing career before joining the faculty of Huntington College. She continues to with symphony orchestras and opera companies throughout the United States.
Classical guitarist Michael Brennan will perform Torre Bermeja by Isaac Albeniz. Brennan received his Master's Degree in guitar performance from the internationally renowned guitar program at California State University at Fullerton. Professor Brennan is now enrolled in the doctoral program at Northwestern and teaches theory, music appreciation, and guitar at Huntington College, as well as serving as faculty advisor to the newly organized traveling student Worship Ensemble.
Church Music professor and tenor Phil Burkett will sing the Four Mystical Songs on sacred texts by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. He will be accompanied by his wife, Darlene Burkett, piano faculty and director of the Huntington College Handbell Choir.
Newcomers to the Huntington College music faculty include coloratura soprano Lucretia Fleury and tubist and cellist Robert Lynn. Professor Fleury recently completed her Master's Degree in voice performance at Ball State University. She will perform Glitter and Be Gay from Candide by Leonard Bernstein and Dearest Mama from the Ballad of Baby Doe by Douglas Moore. Professor Lynn is a doctoral candidate at Ball State University. He will perform Andante and Rondo from Concerto for Double Bass by Antonio Capuzzi.

The Faculty Showcase Recital will be one of several artistic events during Huntington College's Homecoming 2000. An Alumni Art Exhibition will be hosted by HC's Robert E. Wilson Gallery. Award-winning Christian artist Fernando Ortega will perform with special guests Michelle Tumes and Andrew Peterson at the Merillat Centre for the Arts on Friday, October 6, at 8 p.m. Tickets for this concert are $14, $12 and $10, with special discounts for students and seniors.
