Huntington College students plan blood drive

Following terrorist attacks in New York and Washington DC on September 11, the Huntington College campus community is responding to Red Cross pleas for blood donations. HC's Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service is organizing a comprehensive blood drive for the week of September 17. The volunteer center will shuttle vanloads of students, staff and faculty to blood donation centers in Fort Wayne. "There's been such a wonderful and overwhelming response from Northeast Indiana that this is the earliest the Red Cross was able to schedule us," said Joanne Miller, director of retention and assistant women's basketball coach.
To ensure the greatest efficiency of service, the Red Cross has emphasized the importance of making appointments for blood donation. Huntington College students and personnel are invited to participate on the following schedule:

Wednesday, September 19th 1:45 p.m., Hardy Hall parking lot 3:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, September 20th 2:45 p.m., Hardy Hall parking lot 4:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m.
The Huntington College van will carry 15 blood donors to each appointment. Please contact Tana Fortney by email (tfortney@huntington.edu) or phone (260-359-4027) to reserve a spot on the van. "We will be faxing the names of donors to the Red Cross so please respond as soon as possible if you are willing to donate," says Miller.
Additional blood drives will be organized later in the year.
Huntington College's Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service is a student-directed organization that mobilizes the campus community for Christian service. Founded in 1992, the JMC has become an integral part of HC campus life. During the 2000-01 school year, the Joe Mertz Center documented more than 18,000 hours of volunteer service contributed by students, faculty and staff.
The Joe Mertz Center aims to involve students in the local community, instill a lifelong tendency toward service, and promote the idea that one person can make a difference. The Joe Mertz Center has been listed as an exemplary program in the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges.
