Huntington College to celebrate homecoming
Huntington, Ind. "Huntington College will celebrate its annual Homecoming October 1-3. The weekend will consist of events specially designed for college alumni, students, faculty and staff, and community residents.
The 102nd annual Homecoming weekend opens with a baseball doubleheader against Glen Oaks College. The game begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 at Forest Glen Park. It will be followed by the annual coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen at the Alumni Plaza in front of the Administration Building.
A concert will also be featured at 8 p.m. Friday by contemporary Christian artist Michael Card. For two decades, Card has created musical word pictures that spark the imagination and rekindle lagging faith. With 5 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and 19 "number one" songs to his credit, Michael Card has become a dynamic force in contemporary Christian music. His latest album is Starkindler, which invokes Celtic melodies and ancient Irish hymns to create contemporary-yet-timeless songs of worship. Advance reservations are recommended. A "Block Party," sponsored by the Student Senate, will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. The event will feature food, fun, games and fellowship with students and alumni on the mall in front of the Huntington Union Building (HUB).
Saturday morning festivities begin with the Klopfenstein Classic Golf Outing at the LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington. Tee time is 7 a.m. Registration for the event is $50. Individual players and foursomes may register through Friday, September 24, by contacting the Office of Alumni Relations at (260) 359-4047.
The annual 5K Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning at the Merillat Complex for Physical Education and Recreation. The Alpha Gamma Pi Sorority sponsors the event. Registration is $10 and will begin at 7:30 a.m.
A continental breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. through 10 a.m. at the Habecker Dining Commons.
Registration for all alumni will be held from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. in the Habecker Dining Commons. Campus tours will also originate from this building from 9:30 to 11:30.
At 10 a.m., the College's two new student residences, Meadows Hall and Miller Hall, will be dedicated. Facility tours will be given.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. five-year class reunions, featuring the classes of 1949 (50-year) and 1974
(25-year) will give alumni an opportunity to mingle with old friends in the Habecker Dining Commons. Lunch for students and alumni will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Athletic events will take place throughout the day. The Forester cross-country team will challenge HC's alumni runners at 10 a.m. Also at 10 a.m., the men and women's tennis teams will take on Manchester College. The women's soccer team begins play against Trinity Christian College at 11, while the men's soccer team will go up against Moody Bible Institute at 3 p.m. The annual alumni baseball game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The Alumni Awards Ceremony and the rededication of the Administration Building will begin at the Alumni Plaza at 1:30 p.m. Alumni of the Year will be named and Distinguished Alumni Citations will be awarded at this time. Seating will be available.
At 3 p.m. the Huntington College Alumni Association will host a reception for all past and present Student Senate members at the Dining Commons. At 3:30 an alumni recital featuring David Van Tilburg will be held at the Merillat Centre for the Arts Recital Hall.
From 6 to 8 p.m. an artist reception will be held for Elizabeth Frey-Davis, newly appointed assistant professor of art, at the Robert E. Wilson Gallery in the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
Davis Hall Follies, the traditional student-directed variety show and a favorite of the weekend, is sure to entertain and induce sidesplitting laughter from audiences of all ages. It will begin at 8 p.m. in the Merillat Centre for the Arts, and awards will be presented to the top three finishers. Those wishing to perform should call the Alumni Office at (260) 359-4097 to register.
The evening winds down at 10 p.m. with the annual President's Ice Cream Social at the home of President G. Blair and Chris Dowden.
On Sunday at 9 a.m., a worship service, led by Student Senate, will be held for alumni and students at the Merrilat Centre Recital Hall. Immediately following will be a brunch in the dining commons at 11:30 a.m.
A Faculty Showcase Recital will take place in the Merrilat Centre for the Arts from 3 to 4 p.m. Featured will be Huntington College faculty: Dr. Janice Fulbright, Dr. David Wallis, Dr. Marlene Schleiffer, Dr. Patricia Spedden, and several adjunct faculty presenting a variety of piano, voice, and winds and strings music.
