Huntington hosts Conference on Faith and History

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington College welcomes the biennial meeting of the Conference on Faith and History, the professional organization for Christian historians. The event opens today with the organization's first Student Research Conference, followed by the association's traditional conference program We have about 200 people registered for the meetings, says Dr. Dwight Brautigam, professor of history at Huntington College. Participants are flying in from as far away as Hawaii and Europe for this event. Brautigam serves on the editorial board of Fides et Historia, the journal of the Conference on Faith and History.
The theme of the conference is Tradition, Confession, Perspective: Tools & Communities of Interpretation for the Christian Historian. Noted speakers and panelists this year include George Marsden (University of Notre Dame), Christopher Shannon (St. Marys College) George Giacumakis (California State University at Fullerton), Wilfred M. McClay (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga), Robert Linder (Kansas State University), Shirley A. Mullen (Westmont College), and Joel Carpenter, (Calvin College).

All Huntington College students and the local community are invited to participate in one plenary session, scheduled to coincide with the College's regular Friday-morning convocation. Professor Sonja Wentling of Kent State University will moderate a discussion of the topic, Into the Darkness? Teaching about Nazism and the Holocaust from a Christian Perspective. Featured panelists will include: Raymond Sun, Washington State University; Jeffrey Zallar, Valparaiso University; Richard Pierard, Gordon College; and Theodore Nitz, Gonzaga University. The program will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 11, in the main auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
