Huntington University hosts Science Discovery Day

Huntington, Ind.-Huntington University hosted Science Discovery Day on April 11. Third graders from two Fort Wayne elementary schools, Pleasant Center and Irwin, were the invited guests of the Education Department for a day of science learning and fun.
Approximately 110 elementary students engaged in 25 science discovery centers featuring hands-on science led by Huntington University pre-service teachers and seventh grade assistants from Riverview Middle School. In addition, the children were treated to "Whiz Bang" science demonstrations presented by physics and chemistry professors and students, a Science Magic show presented by Assistant Professor of Education Susie Burson, a snake show presented by Dr. Mike Rowley, associate professor of communication, and student Brian Rayle, and a question/answer session led by three university student athletes, Doug Sheckler, Korey Grow and Joel Sanders. The day concluded with children enjoying lunch in the university's dining commons.
This annual event meets multiple objectives for the university. It provides pre-service teachers with experiential learning opportunities, encourages children to engage in science learning and to view science as fun and exciting, exposes children to the concept of college being attainable for all, and nurtures collaborative relationships between the university and local schools.
