Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi inducts 10 members

Huntington, Ind.-Huntington University inducted 10 new members into the Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi in a convocation held today in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Students were recognized for their superior academics and exceptional character. "Membership in Alpha Chi is the highest academic honor at Huntington University and represents both a recognition of scholastic achievement and a commitment to promoting academic excellence on- and off-campus," said Dr. Paul E. Michelson, distinguished professor of history and chapter sponsor for the Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi.
Dr. Steve Lee, professor of psychology, presents Claire Bates for induction into Alpha Chi.
The following students at Huntington University received induction into Alpha Chi in 2007:
Junior Whitney Abbott is a psychology major from Roanoke, Ind. She is the daughter of Kevin and Angela Abbott and plans to pursue a career in marriage and family therapy.
Junior Claire Bates is a psychology major from Bloomfield, Mich. She is the daughter of Larry and Katherine Bates and hopes to find a career combining her interests of counseling, psychology, writing and international aid.
Junior William Braun is an English major from St. Cloud, Minn. He is the son of Brian and Harriet Braun.
Dr. Jack Heller, assistant professor of English, presents William Braun for induction into Alpha Chi.
Junior Leah Cressman is a social work major from Burlington, Ontario, Canada. She is the daughter of John and Melanie Cressman and is a member of the soccer team at Huntington University.
Junior Lauren Davenport is an exercise science major from Andrews, Ind. She is the daughter of Garrett and Jody Davenport and is a member of the university basketball and track teams and Alpha Gamma Pi.
Senior Sarah Fairchild is a Biblical studies major from Huntington, Ind. She is the daughter of Dave and Becky Kersey and desires to teach the Bible within a church setting.
Dr. Twyla Lee, director of social work education, presents Leah Cressman for induction into Alpha Chi.
Junior Kimberly Hart is a double major in missions and family and children's ministries. She is the daughter of Gary and Beth Hart of Monroe, Ind. Hart wants to either pursue a career working overseas in children or women's ministry or family counseling.
Junior Katie Hursey is a journalism major from Columbia City, Ind. She is the daughter of Robert and Laura Hursey. Hursey intends to pursue a career in newspaper writing or as a professor of public relations. She currently writes for the Churubusco News, the Albion New Era and the Northwest News.
Junior Trent Lloyd is a Biblical studies major from Huntington, Ind. He is the son of David and Janice Lloyd and plans to pursue a career as a relief worker in developing countries or as a university professor.
Matthew Ruiz, instructor in exercise science, presents Lauren Davenport for induction into Alpha Chi.
Senior Cassie Rudy is an elementary and special education major from Huntington, Ind. She is the daughter of Raymond and Pamela Rudy. Rudy intends to teach domestically for a few years to prepare her for overseas opportunities.
Alpha Chi is a national honor society for undergraduate juniors and seniors in all academic disciplines. In 1997, it celebrated 75 years of activity. Its objectives are the stimulation, development and recognition of scholarship and those elements of scholarship that make scholarship effective for good.
Dr. Chaney Bergdall, professor of Bible and religion, presents Sarah Fairchild for induction into Alpha Chi.
The Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society was established in 1967. It is active in the regional and national activities of Alpha Chi and was named the National Chapter of the Year in 2001. In 2007, for the 12th consecutive year, the Indiana Beta Chapter was selected as a Star Chapter of Alpha Chi.
The motto of Alpha Chi nationally is the same as that of Huntington University: "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
