Joe Mertz Center to host Service Emphasis Week
FOR RELEASE: Sunday, January 29, 2006
Huntington, Ind. "Huntington University's Joe Mertz Center will host Service Emphasis Week from January 31 to February 2, 2006. Dr. Luther Whitfield will serve as guest speaker for this event at the Tuesday and Thursday chapels at 10 a.m. and on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.
We're very excited to have Luther on campus. His straightforward and practical approach will undoubtedly challenge our students. Our hope for this week is that students will approach service in new and enlightened ways, said Joanne Miller, director of volunteer services and student activities.
As the senior pastor of New Covenant Worship Center in local Fort Wayne, Ind, an associate pastor of the Chapel, Director of Primetime Community Center and the National Community Ministries Consultant for Youth for Christ, Whitfield devotes himself to serving others through Christ. He has been recognized with a number of honors and is a nationally recognized speaker. As an African-American, Whitfield has built his local Fort Wayne church around diversity. The church started in 2004 with six families and is now home to more than 300 members and is permeating the South Side of Fort Wayne.
The Joe Mertz Center is the student-led service center for Christ. Founded in 1992, the center promotes the idea that one person can make a difference.
