Leland presents faculty lectureship

Huntington, Ind. "Dr. Christopher Leland will present the annual Faculty Lecture on Thursday, May 10, concluding this year's Forester Lecture Series at Huntington College. Leland will address A Remote Existence: Exploring the Challenges of Christianity in a Postmodern Media Culture. This free presentation will be held in the Merillat Centre for the Arts at 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Dr. Ron Webb, Academic Dean of the College, emphasizes the purpose of the faculty lectureship is to provide a showcase for faculty scholarship and to enrich the intellectual and academic environment of the college.
Dr. Leland has served as Associate Professor of Communication at Huntington since 1996. He says of his lecture, my studies have taken me into the role that media plays in our society, and how we react to the mediated messages of our culture. This lecture is a natural outgrowth of my own background, as much of my graduate work was in both critical methodologies of communication and media effects. The lecture topic is relevant and important for myself, and all Christians as we deal with the culture around us.
The lecture will examine the elements that make up late twentieth (and early twenty-first) century tensions between Christians and the media. Leland charges, From South Park and MasterCard ads, to mini-series about Noah and Moses, the tension over the Christian worldview is evident, yet misunderstood. He continues, By exploring the underlying principles and guiding values that each side posits we may better understand not only the issues involved in the debate, but how we may better respond.

Leland's lecture comes at a bittersweet time in his career, as his days teaching at Huntington College will soon be drawing to an end. He will become Senior Fellow for Christian Worldview Studies with the Focus on the Family after this school year concludes. He says, the years at Huntington have been great. The opportunity with Focus on the Family has been a decision we have deliberated on for almost a year. It is really hard to leave since we will miss Huntington and the College very much, but this is where God wants us.
As Senior Fellow with Focus on the Family, Leland will be teaching, writing, and researching on the areas of faith integration and our culture.
