Merillat Centre hosts exhibit of photography by John Eric Hawkins

Huntington, Ind. " The Robert E. Wilson Gallery of the Merillat Centre for the Arts will present the black and white photography of John Eric Hawkins November 15 through December 31, 1999. An artist's reception will be held on Friday, November 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a special gallery talk by Hawkins at 7 p.m. For the past 20 years, John Eric Hawkins has captured the essence of the great western landscape with the 8 x 10 camera. The 8 x 10 negative, carefully employed, gives maximum detail and tonal variance. The prints in the Huntington exhibit feature the latest images by Hawkins. Many portray striking landscapes from the central coast and the eastern Sierra regions of California.
Influenced by a deep tradition of West Coast black-and-white printing, Hawkins accepts nothing less than the strongest, yet faithfully sensitive, print interpretations to share with his audiences. Hawkins packs emotion into each scene. Ever-changing light makes each captured moment special and extraordinary. Hawkins capitalizes upon these sometimes subtle changes, going beyond the picture and sharing an experience with others. Many go through life looking. Hawkins invites you to stop and actually see.
