Music department to present combined student recital

HUNTINGTON, Ind. The Huntington University music department will present a combined Junior/Senior recital by mezzo-soprano Candice James and tenor Jacob Smith at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Longaker Recital Hall of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

James is a senior choral music education major from Delphi, Ind. She performed in solo and ensemble contests in high school, and placed first with "The Entertainers" twice. She was also on a worship team that placed first at state in Fine Arts 2008 for the Assembly of God. She has been involved with Concert Choir and has been studying voice with Professor Joni Killian at HU for the past three years.

Smith is a junior choral music education major from Berne, Ind. He has won Gold Ratings for performing both Schubert's "Ave Maria" and in ensemble, and a Silver Rating for Purcell's "I Attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly." He is currently a member of the university's Concert Choir, and has performed in the HU Theatre Company productions of "'Tis the Season" and "Guys and Dolls." He also won his division at the 2010 National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions, and received honorable mention at the 2011 Student Auditions. Smith is planning on teaching choir at a high school and at the collegiate level.

The recital is free and open to the public.
