New Orleans jazz returns to Huntington University

Huntington, Ind.-New Orleans' unique jazzy sound will make its way north as Huntington University hosts the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in concert Oct 6. This will be the band's second performance at HU; the first was in 1997. The world-renowned band makes its home in the music venue of the same name located in the center of New Orleans' famous French Quarter. Preservation Hall was built in 1750 and has served as a tavern, art gallery, and more recently, a concert hall. Because of its small size, fans crowd together on benches, sit on the floor and stand in the back to just listen to the band.
From its inception in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has carved a name for themselves in their mission to "nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz."
Preservation Hall closed as a result of the devastation from Hurricane Katrina but reopened in May with a celebration that included U2 guitarist, The Edge.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band's unique sound will entertain a Huntington audience at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
Ticket prices range from $22 to $26 for reserved seating; seniors and students 13 years and older will receive a $2 discount, while students 12 and younger will be charged at 50 percent off the general admission price. Tickets for HU students are $5, and all HU faculty and staff will receive a 25 percent discount.
