New study on women’s issues to be released

Huntington, Ind. " Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Senior Fellow of the Beverly LaHaye Institute, a center for studies in women's issues, will present Gaining Ground: a Profile of American Women in the Twentieth Century. The presentation is part of the college's Forester Lecture Series and will be held in the main auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on Monday, February 26, at 8:00 pm. The public is cordially invited to attend. Dr. Crouse "a former White House and political speechwriter, public relations and communication expert, and current advocate for the role of women in our society "will unveil the findings of a recently completed study in this lecture. The report is the result of a decade-long investigation of the role of women in our culture, sponsored by the Beverly LaHaye Institute in Washington, DC.
Dr. Crouse will hold a press conference in the lobby of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on Monday, February 26, at 3:30 p.m. The event will provide an opportunity for journalists to ask questions about the 60+ page report of "indicators of trends affecting women's well-being." Some highlights from the study include:
- Women are living longer and staying healthier into old age.
- There have been dramatic declines in maternal mortality and infant mortality.
- Women have phenomenal progress in educational attainment.
- Women's income has been increasing steadily since 1980, and women are contributing in a major way to the economic boom.
Crouse is quick to point out, however, that all the news is not good. She notes that many more women are facing the burden of raising a family alone. The number of mother-only families nearly tripled between 1970 and 2000. According to the report, Divorce now severs more families every year than the total number of maternal deaths did from 1915 to 1998.
Dr. Crouse is a prolific author, thoughtful scholar and an articulate leader. Her presentation promises to engage our entire community, said Dr. Chris Leland, professor of speech and coordinator of the Forester Lecture Series at Huntington College.
