Overton to speak at Martin Luther King Jr. service

Huntington, Ind.-Huntington University will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a commemoration service that will feature speaker Dr. Lora Overton, obstetrician and gynecologist for Huntington and Fort Wayne. The theme of Overton's presentation will be the Christian and Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream.
"Chances are, Dr. Overton delivered a number of Huntington University's own children into the world," said Jesse Brown, assistant dean of student development. "She is a wonderful woman with a great passion for ministry."
Preeminence, the university's worship ensemble, will provide music for the event.
The service will begin at 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 15 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The public is invited to attend.
Overton was born, raised and educated in Oklahoma. She became a born-again Christian at a young age. She was active in her home church where her father served as pastor. Overton attended the University of Oklahoma where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and then went on to medical school at the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. From there, she moved to Texas where she did both a family practice and an obstetrics/gynecology residency. During this time, she remained active in her church where she taught Sunday school for children and adults as well as served as superintendent of Sunday school and director of vacation Bible school.
In Texas during her residency, she taught at church occasionally, mostly at Youth for Christ, but mainly she was in the three to five year class for three years. When Overton moved to Indiana, she became active in her church in a variety of ways including leading Bible studies, book clubs and prayer.
