Photography exhibit opens at Merillat Centre

Huntington, Ind. " The Robert E. Wilson Gallery of the Merillat Centre for the Arts will host Insights, a collection of photography by Robert Hill, February 1 through 23. Admission is free. The gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and before all Merillat Centre performances. An artist's reception and gallery presentation will be offered February 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend.
Robert Hill served as professor of fine arts and humanities at Elizabethtown (KY) Community College from 1966 until his retirement in 1997. He has continued to present his photography in both individual and invitational group exhibits throughout his home state of Kentucky. Hill has also produced two books, A Few Good Works: Haiku poetry and photographs (1997) and Sifting the Dust: Narrative poetry and images (1999).
Photography, perhaps more than any of the visual arts, is dependent upon the immediate presence of light, Hill explains. The photographer must be sensitive to the moment and the changes that occur within the subject because of shifting light patterns. An object or landscape remains ordinary until the miracle of light occurs... and suddenly the landscape is transformed beyond its ordinary dimensions. Shadows, textures, forms acquire a life of their own, invite us into their reality and become a part of our experience. I think many of us relate to an image because some element of our self resides there. This, to me, is the energizing quality of light. It transforms the image into a dimension beyond its literal identity.
