Prof. Rebecca Coffman to Speak at Auxiliary Breakfast
FOR RELEASE: Wednesday, August 22, 2001
Huntington, Ind. "The Huntington College Women's Auxiliary will hold its Fall Breakfast, Saturday, September 15, in the Habecker Dining Commons. The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., with HC art professor, Rebecca Coffman, presenting the morning's topic, Hang It Up! Art with Rebecca. The cost of the breakfast will be $5.50. Please call to make reservations by Wednesday, September 12, to Shirley Cox (356-1560), Ruth Weber (356-0255) or Barbara Fetters (672-8333). Coffman, a sculptor and potter who has taught art in Texas, New York and Indiana and was a production potter in the hill country of Texas, will help the audience evaluate pieces of art they have or are thinking about hanging in their homes. She will challenge them to think about the beauty of the piece, the intent of the artist, the function of the work and an appreciation for the total impression an art piece displays. Included in the morning topic, Coffman will also present a description of What is Art, and why people are attracted to certain pieces. Coffman's pottery and ceramic sculptures have been presented in art shows and galleries in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Wisconsin.
Also in the morning presentation, HC senior music major, Kelly Mast, will sing two songs from her upcoming Senior Recital, with an accompaniment from fellow music major, Melissa Cole.
The Huntington College Auxiliary has existed since 1903 and involves itself in several projects to benefit students. The Auxiliary's recent completed project was the purchase of framed art in Baker Hall. It included two Impressionist pieces, Monet's Arguentile and Hankey's Fisherman's Cove, and two contemporary collages, Dillard's Jungle Song and Afrique III. The Dillard pieces are mounted in the Campus Street entry in honor of Dr. E. DeWitt and Evelyn Baker's missionary service to Sierra Leone, West Africa.
This year's Auxiliary officers are President Barbara Fetters, Vice President Chris Dowden, Secretary Ruth Weber, Treasurer Jean Root and Corresponding Secretary Elaine Miller. A short business meeting will be held at the breakfast.
