Rev. Ternae Jordan to speak at commemoration service
Huntington, Ind. " Huntington College will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day commemoration service on Monday, January 20, at 11:15 a.m., in the Merillat Centre for the Arts auditorium. Rev. Ternae Jordan, pastor of the Greater Progressive Baptist Church in Ft. Wayne, will be the featured speaker. Rev. Jordan is the founder of the anti-violence organization, Stop the Madness.
Rev. Jordan is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., and a second-generation minister. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee with a major in business education and a minor in religious studies. He also participated in the Harvard School of Divinity Leadership Institute.
Approximately ten years ago, Rev. Jordan's son was shot in the head as he waited for a ride after a piano lesson. The bullet that nearly killed him is still lodged in his head. The shooting occurred a year after Rev. Jordan started the organization, Stop the Madness, to help prevent exactly what happened to his own son. In those ten years, Jordan said he has given funerals for 87 young people lost to violence.
As a recognized leader within the Fort Wayne community, Rev. Jordan served as one of the representatives for the House-Senate Republican Faith-Based Leadership Summit held in Washington, DC in April 2001. Also, as one of the nation's leaders on youth violence prevention, he was chosen by SafeCities of the U.S. Department of Justice to serve on a national panel to discuss safety and after-school programs.
Rev. Jordan is married and is the father of two sons, Ternae, Jr. and JaMichael, and one daughter, DeJuan.
