Sacred music concert to feature 17th Century surround sound

Huntington, Ind. " To help celebrate its 150th year, the Lutheran Church of St. Peter in Huntington will host a concert of sacred music on Monday, October 18 at 8:00 p.m. The concert is open to the general public and is free of charge. The Lutheran of St. Peter is located at 605 Polk Street in Huntington, with parking located off of LaFontaine Street.
The event is an annual production of the Huntington College Department of Music. This year's event at St. Peter's will highlight music for brass instruments, organ and choir. Featured musicians include Huntington College Concert Choir, brass musicians of the Huntington College Wind Ensemble, and the Paramount Brass Quintet. Huntington College brass musicians include: Mary Baker, Bruce Bergdall, Adam Giessler, Mandy Jensen, Matt Maners, Jay Michaud, Ben Newton, Katie Smith and Lisa Umphrey. Huntington College professor Dr. Chaney Bergdall and son Steve Bergdall will also be performing, along with Madonna Hosler and Bruce Lamar from the local community. Brass instruments will include euphonium, French horn, trombone, trumpet, and tuba.
The concert will include hymns and psalm texts played in a loud and lively fashion. The concert will be performed in a very unique antiphonal style, which was first developed in the 1600s by Giovani Gabrieli. In an attempt to make the music descend from heaven, Gabrieli would encircle the congregation of St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, Italy with musicians placed in four different choir lofts located at the front, back, right and left sides of the cathedral. In doing so, Gabrieli created a 17th Century version of surround sound.
Music is among many outstanding academic programs available at Huntington College. Founded in 1897, the Christian liberal arts college offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in nearly 50 academic concentrations.
