“Science and Christianity: Conflict or Coherence?”
Huntington, Ind. "Are faith and science compatible? Are reason and religious belief necessarily at odds? Can a good scientist be a good Christian, and vice versa?
These are among the many questions to be explored by Dr. Henry "Fritz" Schaefer in the first presentation of this year's Forester Lecture Series at Huntington College. The program will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 30 in the main auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The presentation is free and open to the public.
In his lecture, "Science and Christianity: Conflict or Coherence?", Dr. Schaefer will explore the issues surrounding the cultural conflict between science and Christianity. He is a devoted Christian thinker and an articulate scientific mind. He will share how he finds himself in the unique role of a "theological chemist" who moves credibly between groups of Nobel winning scientists and evangelical Christians.
Dr. Henry "Fritz" Schaefer III is director of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University of Georgia. Dr. Schaefer's research uses state-of-the-art computational hardware and software to solve important problems in molecular quantum mechanics. His work has been honored with numerous academic awards. In the period of 1984-91, Dr. Schaefer was the third most highly cited chemist in the world.
He was the recipient of thee ACS Award in Pure Chemistry (1979) the Leo Hendrick Baekeland Award of ACS (1983), the Centenary Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry (London, 1992), and was elected a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Sciences (1984). Dr. Schaefer has been honored as an A.P. Sloan research Fellow, a J.S. Guggenheim Fellow, a Professeur d'Exchange at the University of Paris, and a Visiting Fellow of the Research School of Chemistry, Australian National University, Canberra. He was named one of the 100 Outstanding Young Scientists in America (1984) and is listed in current editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
Huntington College presents the Forester Lecture Series each semester. The free, public lectures are designed to bring interesting persons and topics to the attention of students and the regional community.
