Seminar focuses on life in the wireless age

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington College's next Visiting Executive Seminar will be held on Friday, November 2, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, in the upper level of the Habecker Dining Commons. The seminar will be led by Jim O'Donnell, associate professor of business and executive-in-residence, and Ned Kiser, vice president for advancement. The discussion will be centered on two articles, Inescapably Connected: Life in the Wireless Age from the New York Times Sunday Magazine of April 22, 2001, and Questioning Progress from Books and Culture in the fall of 1998.
Participants will explore technology, not in terms of the gadgets and toys so many people crave (or tolerate) to work successfully or just appear at the cutting edge, but in terms of the personal and philosophical questions that under gird technology.
If you're anything like me, you have, at best, a 'love-hate' relationship with technology, said O'Donnell. I find technology often filled with promises it cannot deliver, promising more productivity and often times making me busier. Technology makes me more of a 'human-doing' than a human being.
Unquestionably, being capable with technology plays an important role in achieving success today, added O'Donnell. I hope our students will work for more than money and quick riches, and with a set of values that can use technology, not merely for convenience and self aggrandizement, but to help redeem this world from its bondage to speed and efficiency.
The Visiting Executive Seminar will be attended by business and civic leaders from the regional community, as well as Huntington College faculty, staff, and students. The event will be structured to foster open dialogue and discussion of the issues and recent case studies. O'Donnell says the give-and-take format will help our attending students, who are 'leaders-in-formation,' to wrestle with these issues in their own lives and future career decisions.
