Sousa’s baton to be used at Band Fest

Huntington, Ind. " The baton of John Philip Sousa will be used during the 2004 Band Fest, An American Tribute, on Sunday, March 28, at 3 p.m., in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts at Huntington College. Paula Hatcher, the wife of Daniel Franko Goldman, will allow each conductor to use the baton at this year's Band Fest. Hatcher will also serve as the flute clinician throughout the weekend.
Upon honoring the famous bandmasters Edwin and Richard Franko Goldman in the 2003 Band Fest, the Huntington College music department began a friendship with the current Goldman family of Baltimore, Md. John Philip Sousa's baton was passed down to Daniel Franko Goldman, grandson of Edwin and son of Richard. Edwin, who was a friend of John Philip Sousa, received the baton from Sousa's wife shortly after Sousa's death.
Free tickets are available for priority seating for the concert.
