Judge Hawkins to present MLK Day address

HUNTINGTON, IND -Lake County Superior Court Judge Calvin Hawkins will present the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day address at Huntington University on January 18, 2010. Hawkins is a 1967 graduate of Huntington University and a member of the Board of Trustees. The 11:30 a.m. presentation is free and open to the public. The event is among several Huntington-area observances of the legacy of Dr. King.
Prior to his appointment to the Lake County bench, Hawkins was a private attorney in Gary, Ind., specializing in civil and church litigation, bankruptcy law, probate and family law.
Along with his undergraduate degree from Huntington University, Hawkins earned a law degree from Howard University and a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary.
He also served on the President's Advisory Council on Excellence at his alma mater as well as on the Alumni Board. In addition, he has taught constitutional development as an adjunct faculty member.
Hawkins is a recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Social Theology Award; Jonathan M. Daniels Fellowship Award; and the Chicago Theological Seminary Fellowship Award.
In the summer of 2008, Hawkins launched the "It's Cool to Stay In School" program in Lake County, Ind.
Hawkins was Huntington's commencement speaker in 1998 when he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In 1975, he was named Alumnus of the Year by the University. Hawkins received the Huntington University Centennial Medallion in 1997.
