Oral history to be topic of EXCEL Gateway course

Huntington, Ind. " In every family there is at least one person who is a treasury of facts, stories and colorful memories of the past. Unfortunately, those memories will all fade unless an individual takes the time to craft those memories into written words. An upcoming Fall Gateway course in the Huntington University EXCEL Program will offer instruction about taking oral history. The four-week course will be held on Monday night, October 17, 24, 31 and November 7.
Taught by Dr. Kevin Miller, assistant professor of communication at Huntington University, this class will allow students to gain a conceptual understanding of what oral history is as well as experiential practice in creating one. Students will learn to conduct interviews, write transcriptions, and create text that captures an older family member's oral re-telling of his or her life experiences. The class will result in a priceless gift for families and unborn generations.
Dr. Kevin Miller joined the communication faculty in 2002, after working several years at Christianity Today magazine where he was associate editor and writer. His Ph.D. in communication is from the University of Kentucky, where he also completed an interdisciplinary graduate certificate in social theory. He received a Master of Arts degree in journalism from Ohio State University and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Eastern Mennonite University. Miller also has a diploma in Christian ministries from Rosedale Bible College.

EXCEL's Gateway Program is an accelerated format of one to eight week courses that meet one night per week throughout the year. EXCEL students can earn core and/or elective credit to meet graduation requirements. Members of the community may also enroll on a credit or non-credit basis for furthering lifelong learning or simply for enjoyment.
