U.S. News ranks HU third among Indiana colleges

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Huntington University was once again listed among the top colleges in the region by U.S. News & World Report.

Huntington ranked third among Indiana's elite colleges and 13th among all Midwest colleges in the 2013 edition of the magazine's guide to the nation's Best Colleges.

"This recognition again affirms that, regardless of how challenging circumstances are in the wider world or how quickly things are changing, Huntington University remains a great place for students to learn."

U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked Huntington among the Midwest's best colleges. This is the 13th consecutive year that the university has been listed among the top 20 schools in the Midwest. Forbes also ranks Huntington as one of "America's Top Colleges," listing the university highest among Christ-centered Indiana institutions. For the fifth year in a row, The Princeton Review named Huntington one of the best colleges in the Midwest.


"Huntington has continued to focus additional efforts on helping our students be more successful. The increased results in the U.S. News survey provide evidence that we are making progress in the important area of student success," said Jeff Berggren, senior vice president for enrollment management and marketing, noting the increase in freshmen retention and average graduation rates. "Both the graduation rate and the freshman-to-sophomore retention rate increased this year helping Huntington University maintain our high ranking."

To rank schools, U.S. News first organizes colleges and universities by category and then ranks them within each group. Regional universities and colleges are ranked differently According to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, regional colleges "focus almost entirely on the undergraduate experience and offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts." Rankings are based on the following criteria: peer assessment (25 percent), graduation and retention rates (25 percent), faculty resources (20 percent), student selectivity (15 percent), financial resources (10 percent), and alumni giving (5 percent).

All U.S. News rankings appear on the magazine's website. The Best Colleges 2013 guidebook will be available on Sept. 18.

Huntington University provides a Christ-centered education in more than 70 academic programs, including bachelor-degree programs in nursing, exercise science, film, animation, education and social work, and master's degrees in education, counseling and youth ministry leadership.
