University adopts Community Life Agreement

Huntington, Ind.- The Huntington University Board of Trustees approved an updated Community Life Agreement for the campus on January 22, 2010. Trustees adopted the recommendation of a task force appointed by President G. Blair Dowden.

"Over the past year, the Community Life Task Force has worked very hard to review and refine our statements regarding lifestyle expectations," Dowden said. "The result is a more consistent Community Life Agreement for faculty, staff, and students that is based firmly on biblical teaching, matches the social standards of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, and reflects common evangelical practices."

The task force was appointed in November 2008 to address inconsistencies in documents applying to personnel and students. Dr. Mary Ruthi, professor of sociology, chaired the task force, which included representatives of the faculty, staff, and student body. During 2009, the group reviewed existing HU documents, compared similar agreements from other Christian colleges and universities, and sought input from campus stakeholders, including parents and alumni.

"Our goal was to develop an agreement for the entire campus that would reflect three guiding principles: biblical doctrine, students' development, and community," said Ruthi. "Throughout this effort, we have focused on the question, 'What standards will facilitate and enhance a Christ-centered community at Huntington University?'"

The task force developed two interrelated documents: a succinct Community Life Agreement and a more detailed supporting rationale. Early drafts underwent several revisions following input from faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, church leaders, and trustees. The final proposal was endorsed by faculty and staff in November 2009 and adopted by the Board of Trustees during its January business meeting. It will become effective at the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year.
