Student Employment Spotlight: What I Do in Livingston Hall

Jordan Lynden
The life of a Student Content Creator

There are several offices operating out of the lower level of Livingston Hall. I belong to the content creation team in the Office of University Relations. The job of content creator obviously involves — well — creating content, like this blog you are reading now. However, the position is also content researching, editing, and archiving.

Researching and Editing

We will research and document information such as upcoming events or careers related to a specific major. Additionally, we review existing texts to verify the information and sources used, then correct any existing errors. Reviewing written work also involves updating the text to the standard of the Huntington University Style Guide. This is not only to keep published work professional but also to make sure all official University content maintains a consistent writing style.

Archiving

These sorts of tasks come infrequently but still make up a decent portion of our work. This can range from cataloging Huntington University Magazine content chronologically, categorizing statements from alumni, or creating transcripts from audio recordings. This tends to be the most tedious type of task, but sometimes I find it to be strangely satisfying.

Creating...Obviously...

Still, however, writing original content is the main part of the job. I will be asked to make rough drafts for brochures, announcements, etc. Additionally, we are encouraged to write on a topic of our choice that contributes to a broader theme, like student life or spiritual formation. While it is not required, I often reach out to students and staff to get their perspective on a given subject. Finding information on a variety of topics to write about can be difficult. Even so, I see it as a challenge to learn to be more aware of the world around me and not just what is directly involved in my life.

This may seem like a boring job to some, and I cannot say it never is, but it can also be relaxing or even fun. Plus, this serves as a great opportunity to get experience in an office environment as well as practice writing.
