Huntington University offers over 70 academic pathways for students to embark on. With so many options, incoming students may feel outside pressure to choose a major without actually wanting to pursue a career in that field. Entering HU as an undecided major can feel scary, but a national average of 20% of college freshmen begin as undecided. With this information in mind, don’t be afraid to enter HU undecided! With core classes and a helpful career center, you will be equipped with creativity, communication, critical thinking, ethics, teamwork, and leadership even before you choose a major.

Major decided or not, most freshmen begin their academic journey at HU by taking the Core Curriculum. The Core Curriculum features history, philosophy, artistic appreciation, math, social and natural science, English, and Bible classes. The value of the Core Curriculum at HU is priceless because of the liberal arts and multidisciplinary skills that are acquired. A liberal arts approach to education allows students to develop critical thinking habits, which can aid an undecided student when choosing a career path. Additionally, with a wealth of knowledge from multiple areas of study, an undecided student will be well-rounded for whichever major they end up choosing.

Big words like “liberal arts” and “multidisciplinary” all boil down to one key fact: You have time to decide! In fact, I began college as a biology major. When I changed my major to English before my sophomore year, I was still on track to graduate because I had only taken core courses. With the help of attentive advisors and HU's wise academic standards, each student at HU can feel confident that they are right where they need to be. For more information on the specific core courses at HU, take a look at the 2023-2024 Academic Catalog.

Another excellent resource for the undecided student is the Office of Career Services. The Office of Career Services helps students with important decisions, such as their academic goals and major selection, and provides opportunities for self-assessment, decision-making, and learning. Setting goals for your major and future career is essential for accountability and growth, and the staff in the Office of Career Services wants to help you make those goals to find the perfect career field for you! For more information or to set up a meeting with a staff member, call (260) 359-4040 or visit the Office of Student Life in the lower level of the HUB.

At HU, we prioritize student development, both academically and personally. With exceptional academic standards and an intentional staff, students can feel confident in whatever major they choose. For more information about deciding on a specific major, check out HU’s Undecided Major page.
