Adjunct instructor Phil Schurger to present guitar recital

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Huntington University adjunct music instructor Phil Schurger will present a guitar recital at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on campus.

This is a concert of highly dynamic works in the jazz and modern chamber music style. Schurger's original compositions blend the inventiveness of Impressionist music with the spontaneity of improvisation and driving rhythms of jazz.

Schurger completed a Bachelor of Arts program at Northern Illinois University in 2003. He acquired a Master of Music in jazz guitar, composition and electronic music from Northern Illinois University in 2004. Schurger has been an instructor of guitar at HU since 2005.

While attending Northern Illinois University, Schurger studied with virtuoso Fareed Haque. In the summer of 2003, he had the opportunity to work with accomplished musicians such as Ravi Coltrane, Tom Rainey and Ralph Alessi at The School of Improvisational Music in New York.

In 2007, the Phil Schurger Group, which draws strong influences from the jazz tradition, released two albums, "Motion" and "The Black Hat."

The recital is free and open to the public.
