Graduating art majors to exhibit work in Wilson Gallery

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Huntington University will highlight the artistry of four graduating seniors April 25-May 3 for the Graduating Visual Arts Major Exhibit in the Robert E. Wilson Gallery in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The exhibit, titled "Adieu," will be a culmination of the work by seniors Becky Evans, Alan Hay, Rachel McCoy and Caroline Wilson. It will feature a variety of artwork from clay masks and children's book illustrations to paintings and graphic design. An artist reception will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. April 28.
Evans is a senior art education major with minors in fine arts and graphic design from Zeeland, Mich. She will be displaying a series of photographs and a large mixed-media painting. Her photographs display life in a very raw, imperfect and unembellished way. Her painting is a much more personal piece that represents various seasons of her life using multiple canvases, found objects and a wide variety of subject matter.
Evans has been president of the National Art Education Association HU student chapter during two of her four years at HU and president of the Kappa Pi HU Art Honor Society for one year. She recently took Best of Show at the 22nd Annual Juried Student Art Exhibit.
Hay is a senior studio art major from Fort Mill, S.C. His senior project is a series of oil painted ceramic masks. The collection of work is an exploration of two different concepts. The first is a sarcastic look at society and the masks that are used in daily life. The second part is a group of self-portrait masks that depict aspects of Alan that have been major parts of his college experience.
"My work is a conceptual exploration of masks," he said. "It is how I look at society and an introspective look at the faces that I portray to the world around me."
McCoy is a senior graphic design major from Nashville, Ind. Her artwork encompasses her love for illustration, especially illustration intended for children. She has created a children's board book titled, "Counting Animals." The book presents 10 illustrations plus a front and back cover. Her second body of work was meant to leave some mark on the university before her graduation: A collection of T-shirts designed for various groups and departments on campus.
"My first project encompassed my love for illustrating for children. Even as I've grown older I've always loved looking at the different kinds of children's books and getting ideas for them," she said.
Wilson is a senior graphic design Major from Holland, Mich. Her work explores the conversation between photography, design and aesthetics. She has created a branding project to showcase, incorporating every level of her expertise. After graduation, she will be getting married and moving to Los Angeles to pursue a photography design career.
The Wilson Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., before and after all Merillat Centre for the Arts performances and by appointment. The gallery is free and open to the public.
