Huntington University hosts fifth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Information about breast cancer and ribbons promoting awareness of several types of cancer will be distributed.
Luminaries in honor of or in memory of those who battled any type of cancer will be sold for $1. Proceeds will benefit the Young Survival Coalition, an organization that supports young women battling breast cancer.
| Mary's Hope Wall Merillat Centre for the Arts To celebrate the memory and carry on the legacy of 1986 alumna Mary Knipp, one of the display cases in the Merillat Centre for the Arts will serve as "Mary's Hope Wall." Mary was the inspiration behind Breast Cancer Awareness Week. If you have a relative, friend or someone special to you who has battled cancer, this wall is meant to honor those folks. The center of the wall has a photo of Mary with her story, and we would like to surround those items with photos and stories from others who have coped with the effects of cancer. This is meant to honor those who have had any type of cancer - not just breast cancer. We will add photos and stories throughout the week as they are submitted. The volleyball team will wear pink shoelaces for the remainder of the month to promote awareness. |
| A Survivor Speaks Thursday, October 21, 2010, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Hardy Hall basement lounge Mary Jo Wolf, a cancer survivor from Fort Wayne, will share her story. Refreshments will be provided. Mary Jo is a one-year-and-nine-month breast cancer survivor. She is a single mother with a daughter, Amanda Dennis, who is a senior at Purdue University. Mary Jo has worked in sales and media most of her adult life. She currently works for Fort Wayne Newspapers. To give her cancer purpose, Mary Jo volunteers at Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and other not-for-profit organizations. She speaks regularly and shares her story about her journey with breast cancer to bring awareness and hope to those touched by the disease of cancer. |

| Luminary Lighting Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 8 to 10 p.m. The central mallLuminaries will be lit in honor of or in memory of loved ones who have battled any type of cancer, not just breast cancer. Sign up for a luminary in Habecker Dining Commons or the Huntington Union Building during lunch and dinner hours Oct. 20-27. We ask for a donation of $1 for each luminary to be paid at the information tables or at the luminary lighting. If you have any questions, contact Heather Barkley or Margi Roush. If you cannot attend the event and would like a luminary lit on your behalf, please put $1 per luminary in campus mail to Heather Barkley with a note that includes your name and the name of the person you wish to honor or remember. |
