‘Salad and a Diet Coke’ on the menu at Forester Lecture Series

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Christina Van Dyke, associate professor of philosophy and director of gender studies at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., will discuss the cultural constructions on male and female appetites and dieting during Huntington University's Forester Lecture Series on March 22. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
Her presentation will address cultural gender myths surrounding eating and dieting and how the Christian diet industry contributes to an unhealthy understanding of food and nutrition in the American public. Her presentation will reveal how elements of the Christian tradition can improve the way the public thinks about nutrition and the human body. Her speech is titled, "I'll Have a Salad and a Diet Coke: Eating as a Gendered Act."
Van Dyke has co-edited "The Cambridge History of Medieval Philosophy" and currently serves as the executive director for the Society of Christian Philosophers.
The Forester Lecture Series is designed to bring interesting individuals and topics to the attention of students and the regional community. The lecture is free and open to the public.
