TESOL/EL certificate to be offered in Fort Wayne

HUNTINGTON, Ind. To meet the growing needs of English learners in the Fort Wayne community, Huntington University will offer a TESOL/EL certificate through the Life Science Education and Research Consortium beginning this spring. This certificate equips students and professionals for overseas English teaching, community-based English instruction in the U.S., and church and non-profit outreach to refugees, immigrants and U.S.-born English learners.
"With the growing number of English Language learners (ELLs) in the Fort Wayne area, there is an increasing need for those who are TESOL certified to support those ELLs in companies, churches, non-profits and schools," said Shoshannah McKinney, associate director of the Institute for TESOL Studies at HU.
TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Classes will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday evenings on the Parkview Randallia campus. All TESOL courses are listed for both undergraduate and graduate credit. These courses can be taken as part of a degree, as a stand-alone certification or can be applied toward Huntington's Master of Education in TESOL instruction degree.
The Life Science Education and Research Consortium is a partnership with Parkview Health and other area institutions to offer classes on the Parkview Randallia campus. In addition to the TESOL certificate, Huntington provides bachelor's degree programs in nursing, not-for-profit leadership and human resource management as well as a master's degree program in counseling at the Fort Wayne site.
