Woodside Middle takes first in 2012 HU math competition

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Woodside Middle School in Fort Wayne took home first place in the annual Huntington University Middle School Mathematics Competition held April 18 on campus. Twenty-one area middle schools competed for individual and team awards in demonstration of mathematical abilities. The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics.
Woodside won with 585 points. Northridge Middle School in Middlebury took second with 560 points and Canterbury Middle School in Fort Wayne took third with 500 points.
The top three students were: Peter Dun, an eighth grader from Woodside Middle School with 200 points for first place; Ben Ryker, an eighth grader from Canterbury Middle School with 180 points for second place; and Jonathan Zhou, a seventh grader from Canterbury Middle School with 146 points for third place.
The mathematics competition is made up of three rounds. The first round is a 20-question written exam comprised of questions from algebra, geometry and general mathematics. Students can earn a total of 100 points for the exam. The individual round of the competition is made up of 10 questions. Students are given a minute and a half to complete each question. Each question answered correctly earns a student 10 points. The final round the team round provides additional points for the team score. Students are provided with several problems that are more challenging and best solved through the cooperative efforts of the team. A total of 50 points is possible for the final round.
Other schools competing were: St. Mary of the Assumption, Queen of Angels, Adams Central, Woodside, St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Peter's Lutheran School, Selma Middle, Lakeland Middle, Maconaquah Middle, St. John the Baptist, Emmaus Lutheran, St. Mary (Alexandria), St. Mary (Anderson), Riverview, Northridge, Milford, Wawasee, Anderson Christian, Concord and St. Joseph St. Elizabeth.
