2005 Alumni Awards presented at Homecoming Dinner

Huntington, Ind. " In Homecoming ceremonies today, Huntington University Alumni Director Margaret Roush announced that Kathleen Krum and Doug Slaybaugh have been named an Alumnus of the Year. Roush also announced that Dr. Emmett Lippe was selected to receive the University's Distinguished Alumni Citation. The evening ceremony was attended by approximately 100 alumni and was officiated by Mr. Ralph Tack, Alumni Board president.
The citations, which were read in honor of the recipients, can be viewed below.

KATHLEEN KRUM
HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
2005 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
Each year the Alumni Association of Huntington University recognizes one of its own for outstanding achievement or honor during the past year. Individuals who receive this award represent the ideals of Huntington University through their profession or through some other area of service. The 2005 Alumnus of the Year Award is awarded to Kathleen Krum.
Kathleen Krum, a 1971 graduate, is honored for her outstanding efforts and achievements in the field of education. As a fourth-grade elementary teacher, Kathleen's commitment to developing environmental education and an outdoor lab for her students at Lincoln Elementary School in Cedar Lake, Indiana, has earned her both state and national recognition.
Kathleen was selected as the 2003 Indiana Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts after being nominated by the Lake County District. Kathleen eventually earned runner-up honors for National Conservation Education Teacher of the Year. In 1999, Kathleen was named Lake County Conservation Elementary Teacher of the Year from the Lake County Soil and Water Conservation Association.
Kathleen's environmental education programs include the creation of an outdoor laboratory with different study areas on school grounds. Kathleen founded the Tree Hugger Committee to develop and maintain the site. The site includes a one-mile nature trail, a garden area that is home to a pond, a variety of flower and vegetable beds, a butterfly and hummingbird garden, and a weather station. The trail allows for wildlife observation and student appreciation of nature. Kathleen recruited school and community support to assist in developing the outdoor lab.
Kathleen also has a strong commitment to integrating environmental issues with all of her class curriculum. In addition to studying environmental themed units, Kathleen's students have also taken field trips to learn about different species. They have competed in poster contests and published two environmental books.

DOUG SLAYBAUGH
HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
2005 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
Each year the Alumni Association of Huntington University recognizes one of its own for outstanding achievement or honor during the past year. Individuals who receive this award represent the ideals of Huntington University through their profession or through some other area of service. The 2005 Alumnus of the Year Award is presented to Doug Slaybaugh.
Doug graduated in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Since then, he has become a key leader in church ministry who has earned great respect and admiration among his peers and associates.
After graduating from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1983 with a Master's in Theology, Doug found himself without a clear vocational direction and began working five part-time jobs, one being a mail clerk at the Fuller Institute of Evangelism and Church Growth. As he worked his way from the bottom on up, Doug eventually became the institute's Director of Operations. He also developed an ability to create seminars and ministry tools for pastors and church leaders. During those nine years, he worked with such pastors and leaders as Peter Wagner, Carl George, Rick Warren, John Maxwell, and Bill Hybels.
After leaving Fuller, Doug met a future mentor, Tom Paterson, and began the Life Planning Institute, of which he eventually became the first and only President. At this time he also served on the Board of the International Foursquare Denomination from 1990-1994, working to develop strong relationships between denominations.
In 1992, at the request of Rick Warren, Doug joined Saddleback Community Church to develop the first Purpose Driven workshops. At the same time, Doug was asked by Maranatha Music to develop their Worship Leader workshops. For three years, he served both ministries.
In 1995, Doug joined Saddleback Church and Purpose Driven ministry full-time. He assumed several roles in the church as Pastor of Ministry, Pastor of Missions, and Executive Pastor of their adult ministries.
With the fall 2002 release of Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life and the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign, Doug stepped out of his church responsibilities and focused his efforts on Purpose Driven Ministries. Since then, the book has sold 25 million copies and the 40 days of Purpose Campaign has been used in 30,000 churches around the U.S. With over 400,000 pastors trained, there is now at least one purpose driven church in every country in the world.
Doug currently serves as the CEO and President of Purpose Driven Ministries, whose prayer and vision is to mobilize 20 million churches and 100 million small groups, resulting in one billion Christians around the world fulfilling God's Great Commandment and Great Commission.
Throughout his work and leadership in the church community, Doug has become known for developing strategic initiatives and gathering strong leaders together for the cause of advancing the kingdom. As a leader among leaders, Doug has a caring pastor's heart and the passion of seeing the church transformed and awakened during his generation for the global glory of God.

EMMETT W. LIPPE
HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
2005 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI CITATION
The Distinguished Alumni Citation recognizes each year alumni of Huntington University for distinguished service and achievement over an extended period of time. The individuals who receive this award represent the ideals of Huntington University through their profession or through other areas of service. The 2005 Distinguished Alumni Citation is awarded to Dr. Emmett W. Lippe.
Dr. Emmett Lippe, a 1964 graduate, is recognized for his outstanding efforts and commitment toward the field of education. His achievements include serving as superintendent for one of the top school systems in the country.
Emmett began his career as an Indiana math and business teacher. His commitment to education is also evidenced by his graduate work with a Master of Arts in Business Education, a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Curriculum, and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Administration and Curriculum. A former Huntington University education professor and former Huntington University trustee, Emmett has served as school superintendent to four school districts.
As the current superintendent for Novi Community Schools in Detroit, Michigan, Emmett's leadership has guided Novi and its approximately 6,000 students to outstanding academic achievement, continued development, and national recognition as one of the top 100 high schools nationwide. Emmett's leadership at Novi includes having developed a Strategic Long-Range Plan for the school system, which has resulted in the construction of new schools, a new administration building, and a technology center.
Emmett's service to others and contributions to the field of education have been recognized by the Michigan State Senate, the State House of Representatives, and the Governor of Michigan, as well as many other organizations and publications. In 2000, he was one of fifteen school superintendents nationwide to receive a distinguished Fulbright Scholarship to travel throughout Germany studying German culture and educational systems.
