7:45:00pre-pharmacy track this fall to give students a head start on earning a doctorate degree.

Students in the track will take two to three years of pre-pharmacy study at Huntington and then directly enter a four-year pharmacy doctoral program at another institution. In all, students will earn their doctorate degrees in pharmacy up to two years faster, without first having to complete a bachelor's degree. A Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree is required to practice pharmacy in the United States, and the accelerated route is becoming more common among students.

The purpose of the pre-pharmacy track is to provide a high-quality, Christian education from Huntington while creating an accelerated path to earning a doctorate degree in pharmacy. The track builds on Huntington's excellence in biology and chemistry as well as continuing the successes of the university's accredited nursing program, innovative RN-to-BSN program, multiple exercise science programs, and the high rate of medical school acceptance for pre-med graduates. The university is also launching a new bachelor's program in pre-athletic training this fall as well as developing a master's and doctoral-level program in occupational therapy.

Through a selected combination of biology, chemistry, math and other liberal arts courses, high-performing students will be prepared to enter a pharmacy doctoral program after several years of study at HU. Students in the accelerated track who change their early-entry plans would have the option of completing a degree in biology or chemistry at HU. Students who prefer a more traditional track to pharmacy school may complete a four-year degree in chemistry or biology at HU while experiencing intellectual and emotional growth and extending their options into related careers.

"As the higher education landscape continues to shift, it's vital for us and for students to find the fastest, most solid routes to good careers," said Dr. Del Doughty, interim senior vice president for academic affairs. "This track makes good sense from any number of perspectives, and it will provide a significant savings of time and money for students who want to pursue a faster route to the pharmacy field."
