Who’s Ready for Registration?

Three tips to get you ready for next semester

With a long list of classes, potential scheduling conflicts, numerous course requirements, internship hours, and clinicals, registering for classes can be overwhelming. Thankfully, as always, Huntington University is here to help you in each stage of life, including registering for next semester! Here are a few tips to make registration go as smooth as possible:

1. Run a degree audit and check your GTP or major checksheet

Before you meet with your advisor to be cleared for registration, run a degree audit for your major. This can be found in the HU Portal. A degree audit checks your individual progress within your major’s requirements. After it has assessed the classes you have already taken, the degree audit shows you which course requirements you still need to complete to graduate. While a degree audit might seem scary, it is a helpful tool if you are unsure of which courses you still need.

Another option is to check your GTP or checksheet, which can both be found on the Office of the Registrar’s Current Students page. A GTP, or Guide to Typical Program, gives you a rough outline of what your four years, or eight semesters of classes, at HU will look like. I like to use the GTP or major checksheet because I can print both and work through each paper with my advisor, checking off my completed courses and examining the requirements I still need.

2. Look over the schedule of classes and make a draft of your potential schedule

After you know which courses you need to complete for the next semester, browse through the schedule of classes for spring 2024. This document, split up by major/department, provides information on the different sections and times that each course has available. If you have a course conflict, such as two courses you need to take that are taught at the same time, don’t panic! Most courses at HU are on a two-year cycle, which means that even if you can’t take a certain course now, it will be available to you in two years when a professor teaches it again. Also, when reviewing the schedule of classes, make sure to keep in mind that you still need to attend chapels on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 a.m. to receive spiritual life credits!

3. Be excited for your courses and ask for help!

While registering for classes can be stressful, the end goal is to be looking forward to the courses you are taking in the next semester. At HU, we are blessed to have the opportunity to learn more about other fields of study through core curriculum while diving deeply into the knowledge our own majors provide. We are also blessed to have a caring and equipped staff! The Office of the Registrar, located on the first floor of Becker Hall, is extremely helpful with scheduling conflicts, graduation completion forms, and so much more! If you run into any issues when registering for classes, contact them by email at RegistrarsOffice@huntington.edu, by phone at (260) 359-4011, or by visiting in person.

At HU, our goal is to glorify Christ through our academics. As you register for courses, keep these values in mind: stay patient in the midst of stress, have gratitude for your ability to learn in higher education, and be excited for all the opportunities that are available to you in the spring of 2024!
