Campus donates thousands of volunteer hours during 2012-13

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Huntington University students, faculty and staff contributed more than 8,440 volunteer hours this year in the greater Huntington and Fort Wayne communities. "We do everything from more than hundreds of hours served on missions trips to those who have donated an hour of their time for the blood drive," said Grace McBrayer, director of volunteer service and outreach ministry. "And we know we are beyond what we have recorded in numbers of volunteers and the amount of hours served."
Huntington University's Friesen Center for Volunteer Service tracks the hours that are volunteered by the campus at locations such as Youth for Christ, Huntington Kid's Club, the Love Church in Fort Wayne, the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington, the Adopt a Grandparent program, Habitat for Humanity and on-campus blood drives through the American Red Cross and Volunteer 911.
Students, faculty and staff also volunteer each semester during the fall and spring workdays. This year, 994 volunteers participated in the workdays.
Volunteers involved with Huntington University also donated more than 291 units of blood collectively through the American Red Cross blood drives.
The Friesen Center is a student-directed organization that mobilizes the campus community for Christian service. Each year, more than 70 percent of resident students are involved in some form of volunteer service.
"Volunteering can be something that gives life to you instead of draining life from you," McBrayer said. "That's what we want to teach our students."
