HU honor society to participate in national convention

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Eleven members of the Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi at Huntington University will attend the Alpha Chi National Convention in St. Louis, Mo., March 27-29, where they will present papers, display artwork, help lead workshops and compete for scholarships.

The following will present papers:

• Luke Batdorff, a junior mathematics major from Bluffton, Ind., "An Analysis of the Euler Method"
• Daniel Binkoski, a senior entrepreneurial small business management, management and economics and finance triple major from Whitmore Lake, Mich., "The Context and Impacts of Land Reform in China"
• Bronwen Fetters, a junior English writing and English literature major from Huntington, Ind., "Daughter of an American Mennonite"
• Hannah Hochstetler, a senior graphic design major from Goshen, Ind., "Psalm 139: A Series of Perceptional Portraits"
• Alex Hoffman, a senior computer science, accounting and philosophy major from Huntington, Ind., "Mythical Creatures and the Problems They Cause for the Philosophy of Language"
• Amy Landhuis, a junior history education major from Huntington, Ind., "The Root of Evil: Comparing the Formative Influences on Hitler and Mussolini"
• Will Stauffer, a senior communication studies major, "Athletics and Racetalk in a Small Midwestern Town: How Whites Perceive Black Athletic Ability"
• Jannea Thomason, a junior English major from Huntington, Ind., "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter: Characters and Their Alcohol"
• Andrew Wickersham, a junior history major from Huntington, Ind., "We Hold What We Have (and Yield What We Must): The Impact of American Anti-Imperialism on British Colonial Policy (1940-1945)."

The chapter also will present two of the 14 chapter-strengthening sessions at the convention, including one, "Campus Programs with a Purpose," and another on "So You Want to Go to Graduate School?" The group will be accompanied by sponsors, Dr. Paul E. Michelson, Department of History, and Mrs. Jean Michelson, RichLyn Library. Dr. Michelson also serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of Alpha Chi's Region V and as a member of the Alpha Chi National Council.

The Indiana Beta chapter is one of the most active chapters in Alpha Chi nationally, having won the outstanding Alpha Chi chapter Cup in 2001, and will be recognized at the convention for being one of only four chapters (out of some 300+) to receive this award every year since its inception in 1996. In addition to the Michelsons, sponsors of the local chapter include Dr. Ann McPherren (Business and Economics), Dr. Ruth Nalliah (Chemistry), Dr. Kent Eilers (Bible and Religion), Prof. Rebecca Coffman (Fine Arts), and Dr. Jeff Webb (History).
