HU students assist Huntington with flood relief

HUNTINGTON, Ind. In the midst of rising rivers and flooding streets, 16 Huntington University students chipped in to help Huntington County residents fill sandbags and deliver them across the area. The effort was the result of a Volunteer 911 request through the Friesen Center for Volunteer Services.Jacob Cross, a Friesen Center volunteer coordinator and the student leader of Volunteer 911, received a call at 5:30 p.m. April 3. Allison Timbrook, the city's Community Engagement volunteer coordinator, placed the call and submitted the request. Cross contacted student leaders in several dorms, and within an hour, he had his team ready to serve.
"The students really responded well and wanted to help out the town," Cross said. "Some floors in the dorms even made helping out for their floor chapel service for the night."
Sandbags were filled on the spot and made available for the public to pick up and use as needed. Deliveries were made to residents who were unable to pick up sandbags for themselves. Huntington students spent more than two hours filling and delivering bags with community volunteers.
